At the beginning of the year, I began to ponder the word “Unique.”  I first became aware of the word in my 8th grade homeroom class, held in the music room, of my junior high school.  I don’t quite remember what made the music teacher say to me I was unique, but whether it was because of something I said or did, I will never know.  What I do remember is that he took the time to notice me, in a kindly way, and acknowledge “my being” using this wonderful word.

When I decided that I wanted to create art full time, and share it with the world.  I had to come up with a name for my business.  My husband and I brainstormed with several names, but when we hit upon “Sew Unique Art,” we knew this was the one.  Once again, the word unique had come into my life to help me express the one- of- a- kind art I was creating – art unlike any other.

I decided to revisit the word unique this year.  To explore it, and grasp its meaning in a deeper way, especially since it has been my companion in life.  Then it dawned on me that throughout my life, I had not given it the attention that it deserves.  I thought it fascinating to see where this word would take me at this present time.

I began with going outside the box, and creating an art piece with the word “Unique” as the center of attention in a garden that is in continual growth just as the word is to me. I say this because I can see how the word unique has meant different things to me during different stages in my life.

I searched out the definition of Unique- being the only one of its kind, unlike anything else, solitary in type or characteristics.  As I ponder these definitions, I decide to focus on how I considered “unique” now.  I feel that it is embodied by each and every one of us, and it makes me realized that we all have unique characteristics or qualities that when expressed creatively they are unlike anything else that can be created.

For example, I can teach you what I create, but you will translate it through your experiences and character, and through you it will become something new and different.   I find it wonderfully refreshing to know that when we take the time to create, each one of us is creating in a unique way.
